Student Visa Changes 2024: What You Must Know

From March to July 2024, Australia introduced major student visa changes 2024 that affect applicants and graduates. These include the new Genuine Student (GS) requirement, higher English test scores, age limits for the Temporary Graduate visa (485), shorter post-study work rights, and new onshore restrictions.

Genuine Student (GS) Requirement Replaces GTE

On 23 March 2024, the government replaced the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement with the Genuine Student (GS) test.

Instead of a long personal statement, applicants now answer targeted questions about:

  • Their study plan

  • Academic progression

  • Future career goals

👉 The GS requirement ensures students are genuinely coming to Australia to study, not just using the student visa as a backdoor pathway to work or permanent residence.

Higher English & Age Requirements

Alongside the GS reform, English language requirements increased for both Student visas and Temporary Graduate (485) visas. Applicants now need higher test scores in IELTS, PTE, or equivalent exams.

In addition, the maximum age for most Temporary Graduate (485) visas has been reduced to 35 years. Exceptions apply for Master’s by Research and PhD graduates.

Post-Study Work Rights Reduced

From 1 July 2024, the post-study work duration for the Temporary Graduate visa (485) was shortened. The age cap changes also affect eligibility, making it important to plan your visa and career timeline carefully.

Onshore Restrictions: No More “Visa Hopping”

As of July 2024, certain visa holders (including Visitor and Temporary Graduate visa holders) can no longer apply for a Student visa while onshore.

👉 This means applicants must now apply from outside Australia, closing a pathway that many used to extend their stay.

How to Prepare for Success

If you’re applying under the student visa changes 2024, here are some tips:

  • Answer GS questions carefully: Show how your course matches your background and future goals.

  • Check your English test scores: Ensure you meet the new minimum requirements.

  • Be aware of age limits: Especially for Temporary Graduate visas.

  • Plan your application timing: If you’re on a visa that restricts onshore applications, prepare to apply from overseas.

The 2024 student visa changes mark a significant shift for international students in Australia. By understanding the GS requirement, higher English standards, and new restrictions, you’ll be better prepared for a successful visa outcome.
