482 Nomination Transfers and SAF Levy — Do You Only Pay One Year?

When a Subclass 482 visa holder transfers to a new employer, questions often arise about how much Skilling Australians Fund (SAF) levy the new sponsor needs to pay. Can they pay for just one year if the visa holder’s current visa is expiring soon?

Understanding SAF Levy Payments

The SAF levy is typically paid for the entire nomination period. For Medium-term stream nominations, this is usually four years. However, when a nomination transfer occurs partway through a visa holder’s stay, the calculation can be different.

One Year SAF Levy Scenario

If a visa holder’s current 482 visa expires in, say, 18 months, and a new employer lodges a nomination transfer, they may only need to pay SAF levy for the remaining period of the visa rather than a full four years.

The key principle is that the SAF levy covers the nomination period. If the new nomination is for a shorter period (due to the visa’s existing expiry date), the SAF levy is calculated accordingly.

Practical Example

Consider a visa holder whose 482 grant is until 2026. If a new employer lodges a nomination in late 2025, they would only pay SAF levy for approximately one year — the remaining period until the visa expires — rather than a full four-year payment.

Always verify the exact calculation with the Department or through ImmiAccount during the nomination lodgement process.
