Assurance of Support and Timing for the Aged Parent 804 Visa

804 assurance of support

Applying for an Aged Parent (subclass 804) visa involves a mandatory Assurance of Support (AoS). Some applicants worry about obtaining the AoS before lodging, particularly when their visitor visa is nearing expiry. This article explains when an 804 assurance of support is required and why it is not needed at lodgement.

An 804 assurance of support is only requested once the application reaches final processing.

The AoS is a time-of-decision criterion, not a time-of-application requirement. It will be requested only when the application is released from the queue for final processing, which is usually many years in the future. Therefore, you do not need to arrange the AoS before lodging the visa. Given the extremely long processing times for the subclass 804, applicants may be more concerned about passing health checks than obtaining the AoS.

You should still ensure that the prospective assurer (usually an adult child) understands the financial commitment involved. When the Department is ready to finalise your application, they will issue instructions for lodging the AoS and providing the bond. In the meantime, focus on submitting a complete application with all required documents and maintaining lawful status in Australia.
