Why You May Need a Bridging Visa B
If you have a matter pending at the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) or the Administrative Review Tribunal (ART) and you hold a Bridging Visa A (BVA), you remain in Australia lawfully while your case is reviewed. However, if you need to travel overseas, you must obtain a Bridging Visa B (BVB) to depart and return without jeopardising your status.
Eligibility During Merits Review
- You must hold a valid BVA that is in effect while your application or review is underway.
- A BVB allows you to leave and re-enter Australia during a specified travel period.
- Without a BVB, your BVA will cease upon departure and you will not be able to return on that visa.
How to Apply
- Apply through ImmiAccount: Bridging Visa B applications during merits review must be submitted online via ImmiAccount.
- Apply early: Processing times vary, so lodge the application well in advance of your intended travel. Do not make travel arrangements until the BVB is granted.
- Check your hearing schedule: The Tribunal may schedule your matter for hearing. A pending hearing can influence the travel period granted on your BVB.
Travel Period Considerations
The Department typically grants BVB travel rights for three to six months. The travel period may be shortened if your case is listed for hearing soon. If the travel period expires while you are overseas, you cannot return on the BVB and will need to apply for a new visa from offshore.
Key Advice
- Apply for a BVB well before you intend to travel.
- Review your Tribunal hearing status and plan your travel around it.
- Ensure you return to Australia before the expiry of the BVB travel period.
