Bridging Visa B (BVB) and Overseas Travel: What Refused Applicants Need to Know

Bridging Visa B is one of the most misunderstood visas in Australian immigration. People assume because they’re on a Bridging Visa A while waiting for a decision, they can simply leave and return. They can’t — leaving on a BVA terminates the BVA and they cannot re-enter on it. BVB is the answer, but with strict conditions.

What BVB is for

Bridging Visa B is a temporary travel-enabled bridging visa that allows you to leave Australia and return within a specific period, while keeping your underlying substantive visa application or appeal active. Think of it as a “permission slip” to travel that doesn’t terminate your existing immigration status.

  • Available to: anyone currently on a Bridging Visa A or B
  • Travel facility: a defined period from grant date during which you may travel; specific duration is set in each BVB grant letter
  • Cannot be on a Bridging Visa C, D, or E and apply for BVB
  • Must have compelling reasons for travel

What counts as “compelling reasons” in 2026

Department guidance defines compelling personal reasons broadly:

  • Serious illness or death of a close family member overseas (parent, sibling, child, grandparent)
  • Wedding of an immediate family member
  • Religious or cultural pilgrimage (Hajj, religious ceremonies)
  • Business travel essential to your employment
  • Compassionate circumstances — e.g. mental health support needed for a family member abroad

NOT compelling: tourism, casual visiting, “I just want to go home for a few weeks.” These can be approved but with longer processing and more documentary requirements.

How to apply for BVB

  • The current BVB application form (lodged online via ImmiAccount — confirm the current form number on the Home Affairs site)
  • Evidence of compelling reasons: medical letters, death certificate, wedding invitation, business letter, etc.
  • Evidence of intention to return: lease, employment, family in Australia, kids in school, ongoing visa application
  • Return air ticket (not required at lodgement but helpful)
  • Processing time: published by Home Affairs and varies; urgent applications can be expedited where you demonstrate genuine urgency

Critical things to remember

1. Leave BEFORE BVB expires

The BVB has a “must depart by” date. Leaving Australia after that date means you’re leaving on a different status — usually unlawful.

2. Return BEFORE the travel facility expires

The BVB has a “must return by” date. Coming back after that date means you’re no longer on a Bridging Visa — you’ll need a new visa to enter Australia.

3. Don’t let BVB lapse without using it

A BVB doesn’t reactivate. If granted but unused, you’re still on BVA. If you later need to travel, apply again.

4. Multiple trips usually need separate BVBs

Generally one travel facility per BVB. If you need to travel multiple times, you may need multiple BVBs (or a BVB with extended travel facility).

5. Some bridging-visa scenarios don’t allow BVB at all

Refusal-while-on-Bridging-Visa-E (BVE) cases generally cannot get BVB. ART appeal applicants usually can, but check your specific situation.

What happens if you leave Australia without BVB?

Your BVA terminates the moment you exit Australia. Your visa application or appeal MAY continue but you’ll need to apply for a different visa to re-enter Australia. If your original application is decided while you’re overseas, you’ll receive notification but won’t be able to receive a substantive visa onshore. Most likely, you’ll need to apply offshore which restarts the entire timeline.

Frequently asked questions

Can I work in Australia between BVB grant and departure?
Yes. Your work rights from the underlying BVA continue while you hold BVB.
Can I work overseas while on BVB?
You’re no longer in Australia so Australian work rights don’t apply. Work overseas is governed by that country’s rules.
How many times can I apply for BVB?
As often as you need new travel facilities. Repeated applications are not flagged unless the pattern suggests immigration concerns.
Will my BVB application affect my substantive visa application?
No. BVB applications and substantive visa applications are processed separately. The case officer on your BVB does not influence the substantive case officer.
What if I’m refused BVB?
You can apply again with stronger evidence. Refusals usually relate to weak compelling-reasons evidence. There is no formal review for BVB refusal.

Final word

Plan ahead. Apply for BVB 2-3 weeks before travel. Bring evidence of compelling reasons and intent to return. Don’t leave without it — the cost of being stuck overseas waiting to re-enter is far higher than the BVB application time.
