Citizenship Test Challenges — Tips for Applicants Who Struggle to Pass

The Australian Citizenship Test requires applicants to score at least 75% and correctly answer all five “mandatory” questions about Australian values. However, the test doesn’t indicate which questions are mandatory, making preparation challenging.

Common Challenges

Some applicants struggle with questions that test specific cultural or historical knowledge, such as symbols on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags. While the test is designed to assess knowledge of Australia, some questions can be particularly challenging for applicants whose first language is not English.

Helpful Tips

The Department of Home Affairs provides the “Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond” resource booklet in multiple languages. Applicants can access versions in Vietnamese, Chinese, Arabic, and many other languages through the official DHA website to help with preparation.

However, it’s important to understand that the test itself must be completed in English, as this also demonstrates the English language competency required for citizenship. The test is fundamentally about demonstrating both knowledge of Australia and adequate English skills.

Can You Request Your Test Results?

While applicants receive their overall pass/fail result, the specific questions answered incorrectly are not typically disclosed. Some applicants have considered Freedom of Information (FOI) requests to obtain more detailed results, though the success of such applications varies.
