Skills in Demand Visa (Subclass 482) Document Checklist: Complete 2026 Guide

📋 Quick Overview

Sponsored by an Australian employer? This checklist helps employers and workers organise the main documents for a Skills in Demand visa matter. Requirements depend on the stream, business, occupation and applicant.

The 482 visa has no age limit for the temporary stage — whether you are 25, 45, or 55, you can be sponsored as long as you meet the skills, health, and character requirements. However, if your goal is to transition to permanent residency through the 186 visa, the primary applicant generally needs to be under 45 at the time of the PR application.

At VisaTasker, we guide both employers and employees through the sponsorship process. Use the sections below to organise the evidence relevant to your matter.

📄 Three Stages of the 482 Process

Standard sponsorship cases involve sponsorship, nomination and visa stages. A business with an appropriate current sponsorship approval may not need a fresh sponsorship application. Labour Agreement cases have separate arrangements.

1. Sponsorship — Confirm the business’s current approval or the sponsorship application needed.

2. Nomination — The employer nominates a specific position for the visa holder.

3. Visa Application — The worker applies for the visa itself.

Each stage has its own document requirements.

📄 Stage 1: Employer Sponsorship Documents

Employer records to prepare may include:

  • ✅ABN (Australian Business Number) registration
  • ✅Certificate of incorporation or business registration
  • ✅Evidence of active and lawful business operations (financial statements, BAS, tax returns)
  • ✅Evidence of compliance with Australian workplace laws (no adverse findings, Fair Work compliance)
  • ✅Organisational chart showing where the nominated position fits

Standard business sponsorship lasts five years from approval.

📄 Stage 2: Nomination Documents

The employer must demonstrate the position is genuine, needed, and matches the nominated occupation:

  • ✅Position description and employment terms that accurately explain the duties, hours, occupation and required qualifications or licences.
  • ✅Recruitment records meeting the labour market testing requirements for the pathway, including advertising content, duration, timing and results, unless an exemption applies.
  • ✅Evidence addressing the annual market salary rate and the income threshold applicable to the stream and nomination date. Check the current Home Affairs salary requirements before setting the nominated salary.
  • ✅Organisational chart showing reporting lines and the position’s place in the business
  • ✅Employment contract offered to the nominee, reflecting the nominated position and salary
  • ✅Business turnover and proposed employment period for the applicable Skilling Australians Fund levy.
  • ✅Evidence of genuine need — business growth records, contracts, or operational requirements demonstrating the need for the role

Common Nomination Pitfalls

  • ✅Job description duties not matching the ANZSCO code
  • ✅Salary set just to meet the threshold with weak market salary justification
  • ✅Unclear or missing organisational chart
  • ✅Recruitment evidence that does not meet the pathway’s advertising content, method, duration or timing requirements.

📄 Stage 3: Visa Applicant Documents

Identity

  • ✅Current valid passport (biographical page)
  • ✅Birth certificate
  • ✅National identity card (if applicable)
  • ✅Passport-sized photographs

Skills Assessment (If Required)

  • ✅Skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority
  • ✅Employment evidence addressing the experience requirement for your stream; identify the occupation, duties, dates and hours worked.
  • ✅Not all occupations require a formal skills assessment — check the specific requirements for your occupation

Qualifications

  • ✅Degree certificates and academic transcripts
  • ✅Trade certificates or vocational qualifications
  • ✅Professional registrations or licences relevant to the nominated occupation
  • ✅English translations together with the original non-English documents, prepared according to Home Affairs translation instructions.

Employment Evidence

  • ✅Detailed employment reference letters for each relevant role — on company letterhead, with job title, specific duties, dates (day/month/year), hours per week, and confirmation of full-time or part-time status
  • ✅Payslips supporting the employment periods claimed, checked against tax, bank and employer records.
  • ✅Tax records or payment summaries
  • ✅Bank statements showing salary deposits
  • ✅Employment contracts

English Language Evidence

  • ✅English test results meeting the requirements that apply to the primary applicant’s stream and test date, or evidence of an applicable exemption.
  • ✅Check the current Home Affairs 482 English requirements before booking a test or relying on previous results.

Health Documents

  • ✅Health examination via a panel-approved physician (generate HAP ID in ImmiAccount)
  • ✅Evidence of adequate health cover for you and included family members for your intended stay in Australia, taking account of any applicable reciprocal healthcare arrangements. Check the Home Affairs health insurance requirements and your visa conditions.

Character Documents

  • ✅Police clearance certificates from every country where you lived 12+ months in the past 10 years since turning 16
  • ✅AFP check (for time in Australia)
  • ✅Military service records (if applicable)

Family Member Documents

  • ✅Passports and birth certificates for all included family members
  • ✅Marriage certificate or de facto relationship evidence
  • ✅Health and character documents for all family members

📄 Pathway to Permanent Residency: 482 to 186

The 186 Temporary Residence Transition stream may be an option when its nomination and visa requirements are met. Holding a 482 visa does not guarantee permanent residence. Check your employment history, age, English and other criteria against the current Home Affairs 186 TRT requirements.

If your sponsored employment ends, check your visa conditions and the time limits that apply to changing sponsors, obtaining another visa or leaving Australia. Seek advice promptly; do not assume the remaining visa validity is the time available.

💰 Costs

Separate the business’s sponsorship, nomination and SAF levy costs from the worker’s visa application charges. Use the current Home Affairs sponsorship cost guide and Visa Pricing Estimator. Costs that the employer is prohibited from recovering must not be passed to the worker or their family.
