Start with the business

Sponsorship should solve a workforce problem—not create a compliance problem.

A visa is only one part of employer sponsorship. The business must be eligible, the position must be genuine, the salary and employment conditions must comply, and the proposed worker must satisfy the relevant visa criteria.

Our role is to test those elements together, identify risks early and give you a practical plan before your business commits time or money.

01

Your business

Trading history, financial capacity, compliance record, workforce profile and the need for the nominated position.

02

The role

Duties, occupation alignment, location, market salary, employment conditions and whether the position is genuine.

03

The candidate

Skills, qualifications, work history, English, licensing and the visa criteria that apply to the individual.

04

The strategy

Temporary or permanent need, standard or regional pathway, timing, costs and future workforce planning.

Pathways from an employer perspective

The right pathway depends on what your business is trying to achieve.

We compare the business requirements and the worker’s eligibility together. Detailed visa criteria remain under Visa Services for applicants.

Temporary workforce

482 Skills in Demand

For eligible skilled roles where an approved sponsor needs a worker for a temporary period. Core Skills, Specialist Skills and Labour Agreement streams apply.

View applicant visa criteria →
Permanent workforce

186 Employer Nomination

For eligible permanent employer-nominated positions, including qualifying direct entry and temporary residence transition cases.

View applicant visa criteria →
Regional workforce

494 Regional Employer

For eligible skilled positions located in designated regional Australia where the employer and worker meet the regional pathway requirements.

View applicant visa criteria →
Regional agreements

DAMA and labour agreements

For employers whose role or circumstances require an agreement-based pathway. Occupations and concessions vary by agreement and region.

View DAMA information →
Workplace training

407 Training visa

For a genuine, structured occupational training program. It is a training pathway—not a substitute for filling an ordinary vacant position.

View applicant visa criteria →

Important: a pathway is not selected by visa subclass alone. Occupation, salary, location, business status, candidate history and the purpose of the position all affect the strategy.

A disciplined process

From workforce need to a decision-ready application.

Each stage has a separate purpose. We explain what the business is responsible for, what the worker must provide and what VisaTasker will prepare.

01

Employer assessment

We review the business, role, location, salary, candidate and intended timeframe.

02

Pathway and evidence plan

You receive a recommended strategy, likely costs, evidence requirements and identified risks.

03

Sponsor or endorsement stage

Where required, we prepare the sponsorship, accreditation, DAMA endorsement or labour agreement material.

04

Nomination and visa coordination

We prepare the nomination and coordinate the worker’s visa evidence, lodgement and Department requests.

Prepare your evidence

Prepare for your sponsorship assessment

Start with the business, the position and the person you want to sponsor. Bringing those records together helps us identify the pathway, the evidence still needed and the next steps for your business.

Our 482 sponsorship and visa document checklist separates the employer's records from the worker's documents. Use it to organise what you already have before discussing the requirements for your particular case.

Employer responsibilities

Compliance is part of the strategy from day one.

Sponsorship creates obligations that can continue after lodgement and, in some circumstances, after employment ends. We explain the rules that apply to the chosen pathway.

Genuine role and market salary

The position, duties, occupation classification, salary and conditions must be supportable and consistent with Australian employment standards.

Recruitment and labour-market evidence

Labour market testing and recruitment evidence may be required. The timing, content and placement of advertising matter.

Costs that cannot be transferred

Prohibited sponsorship, nomination, recruitment and SAF levy costs must not be recovered from the sponsored worker.

Ongoing sponsor duties

Record keeping, equivalent employment conditions, notifications and cooperation with monitoring can apply throughout sponsorship.

Understand the full cost before proceeding.

The employer consultation is free. If you proceed, professional fees are scoped in writing. Government sponsorship, nomination, visa and SAF levy charges depend on the pathway, business turnover, nomination period and family composition.

2026 Core Skills threshold: AUD $79,423
2026 Specialist Skills threshold: AUD $146,576
Also required: annual market salary and lawful employment conditions
Check at lodgement: thresholds and government charges can change

Build your sponsorship budget

Copy this worksheet into your budget and record a current amount or written quote for each relevant item. Keep employer costs, applicant costs and ongoing employment costs separate. Confirm the pathway, nomination period, business turnover and family members before estimating government charges.

Check who can pay: Sponsorship and nomination costs, including the applicable SAF levy, must stay with the employer. Do not use a budget allocation or repayment agreement to transfer prohibited costs to the worker. Confirm recruitment, professional-fee and travel responsibilities for the selected pathway.

Check current amounts with the Home Affairs sponsorship cost guide and Visa Pricing Estimator. Record your source / quote and date checked: _____. Official sponsorship guidance checked 26 September 2026; recheck before lodgement.

Use this alongside the 482 employer document checklist and our services and pricing information. A consultation helps confirm which items apply to your matter.

Regional and agreement pathways

Standard sponsorship is not the only option.

Regional employers may have access to the subclass 494 pathway, a Designated Area Migration Agreement or another labour agreement. These arrangements can differ in occupation access, endorsement, salary, English, age and experience requirements.

We identify the agreement covering your location, check the role against the current occupation settings and map the employer and candidate requirements before an endorsement or nomination is prepared.

Industry-aware support

Sponsorship advice built around the actual role and workplace.

Different sectors present different occupation, licensing, award, market salary and workforce-evidence issues. We tailor the strategy to the employer rather than applying a generic visa checklist.

Candidates and recruitment

Whether you have a worker in mind or are still recruiting.

Migration advice and recruitment are different functions. VisaTasker is a migration practice, not a labour-hire agency. Any candidate introduction is optional and subject to availability and individual assessment.

You already have a candidate

We assess the proposed worker against the role and pathway before the business commits to sponsorship.

  • Visa and work-rights history
  • Skills, qualifications and experience
  • English, licensing and registration
  • Occupation and salary alignment

You are still recruiting

We can explain the migration settings that should inform recruitment and may discuss optional candidate introductions where suitable people are available.

  • You control all recruitment decisions
  • Normal screening and reference checks still apply
  • No candidate or visa outcome is guaranteed
  • Work rights are checked for the individual

Employer FAQs

Questions to resolve before sponsoring a worker.

Can any Australian business sponsor an overseas worker?

No. The business, role, salary, occupation and worker must meet the requirements of the selected pathway. Sponsor approval or an agreement endorsement may also be required.

Does my business need Standard Business Sponsorship approval?

Usually for a standard subclass 482 nomination, unless another approved sponsorship or labour agreement arrangement applies. We confirm the required sponsor status during the employer assessment.

What costs does the employer have to pay?

Costs can include professional fees, sponsorship or endorsement charges, nomination charges, the SAF levy, recruitment expenditure and other business costs. Some employer-paid costs cannot lawfully be passed to the worker.

Can VisaTasker tell us which visa to use?

Yes, after assessing the business, role, location, salary and proposed worker. The recommendation may be a 482, 186, 494, DAMA or labour agreement pathway, a 407 training pathway, or advice that sponsorship is not presently suitable.

Can you find a worker for our business?

VisaTasker is not a recruitment agency. We may discuss optional candidate introductions where suitable people are available, but the employer remains responsible for recruitment, suitability checks and the employment decision.

How long does employer sponsorship take?

There is no single timeframe. Sponsor or endorsement approval, nomination and visa processing are separate stages, and timing changes with the pathway, evidence and government workload. No timeframe can be guaranteed.

What happens if the sponsored worker leaves?

The employer may have notification and other continuing obligations. The effect depends on the visa and circumstances, so current advice should be obtained promptly.

Start with a clear employer assessment.

Discuss the role, business and proposed worker with a registered migration professional before committing to a sponsorship pathway.

Migration outcomes depend on the business, position, worker, evidence and the law and policy applying at the relevant time. No visa outcome or processing timeframe is guaranteed. Government charges and income thresholds should be confirmed immediately before lodgement.
