Do You Need Certified Copies of Parents’ Passports for Form 1229?

Question

When submitting Form 1229, do you need to provide certified copies of the parents’ identification or passports? The form states certified copies are required, but the Department of Home Affairs website says documents do not need certification.

Answer

The Department of Home Affairs accepts colour copies without certification. There is no specific rule requiring certification for Form 1229 documents.

However, some countries have specific requirements. For example, Vietnam has a different form that must be witnessed in a government office, with the parents’ identification certified in Vietnamese.

We recommend:

  • Provide a good quality colour scan of the relevant passport or identification document.
  • Ensure the signatures on the form match those on the passports.

The current Form 1229 was last updated in November 2023, so some wording may be outdated. In most cases, colour copies without certification are acceptable unless a particular country requires otherwise.
