More Americans than ever are considering a move to Australia, attracted by the outdoor lifestyle, work-life balance, universal healthcare, and strong job market. Whether you’re an American professional seeking new career opportunities, in a relationship with an Australian, or looking for a fresh start, Australia has visa pathways to suit your situation.
At VisaTasker, our MARA-registered migration agents help US citizens navigate Australian immigration. We understand the unique considerations American applicants face, from tax implications (US citizens are taxed on worldwide income) to qualification equivalencies.
Visa Pathways for Americans
E-3 Visa — Exclusive to US Citizens
The E-3 visa is a special work visa available exclusively to American citizens. It allows US nationals to work in Australia in a specialty occupation for up to 2 years, renewable indefinitely. Unlike the Subclass 482, the E-3 has a dedicated quota of 10,500 places per year and is generally faster and cheaper to obtain. Your spouse receives full work rights in Australia.
Skilled Migration
American professionals in high-demand occupations can apply for permanent residency through Subclass 189, Subclass 190, or Subclass 491. US qualifications from accredited institutions are well-regarded by Australian assessing authorities. Check your eligibility with our Points Calculator.
Employer Sponsored Visas
Australian employers sponsor American workers in tech, healthcare, finance, engineering, and other sectors. The Subclass 482 or the E-3 visa are the main employer-sponsored options, with the 482 providing a pathway to permanent residency.
Partner Visas
Americans in relationships with Australian citizens or permanent residents can apply for partner visas. We help with offshore (Subclass 309/100), onshore (Subclass 820/801), and prospective marriage visas (Subclass 300). The US-Australia long-distance relationship is one of the most common we assist with.
Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 462)
American citizens aged 18–30 can apply for the Work and Holiday Visa (Subclass 462) to work and travel in Australia for up to 12 months, with extension options.
Important Considerations for Americans
- US tax obligations — American citizens must file US tax returns regardless of where they live. The Australia-US tax treaty helps avoid double taxation, but planning is essential
- FATCA compliance — US citizens living abroad face Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act reporting requirements
- Qualification recognition — US degrees are generally well-recognised, though some occupations require specific Australian registration
- Healthcare transition — PR holders get Medicare; the Reciprocal Health Care Agreement does not cover US citizens on temporary visas
