Permanent Residency Australia

Permanent Residency Australia — Your Complete Guide to Becoming a Permanent Resident

Gaining permanent residency (PR) in Australia is a life-changing milestone that gives you the right to live, work, and study indefinitely in one of the world’s most desirable countries. Australian permanent residents enjoy access to Medicare, can sponsor family members, and after meeting residency requirements, can apply for Australian citizenship.

At VisaTasker, our MARA-registered migration agents have helped hundreds of individuals and families achieve their goal of permanent residency. This comprehensive guide covers every pathway to Australian PR, eligibility requirements, and how to maximise your chances.

Pathways to Australian Permanent Residency

Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189)

The Subclass 189 is the most sought-after PR visa — it requires no employer sponsor or state nomination. You need an occupation on the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List, a valid skills assessment, and a competitive score on the points test (minimum 65 points). Invitations are issued based on points ranking.

Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190)

The Subclass 190 offers permanent residency with nomination from an Australian state or territory. You receive 5 additional points for nomination, and each state has its own occupation list and requirements. This is an excellent option if you don’t quite reach the 189 threshold.

Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186)

The Subclass 186 provides permanent residency through employer sponsorship. The Temporary Residence Transition stream is the most common pathway — after working for your employer on a Subclass 482 visa for 2–3 years, they can nominate you for PR.

Regional Pathway (Subclass 191)

If you hold a Subclass 491 or Subclass 494 provisional visa, you can apply for the Subclass 191 permanent visa after living and working in regional Australia for 3 years and meeting income requirements.

Partner Visa (Subclass 801 / Subclass 100)

If you’re in a genuine relationship with an Australian citizen or permanent resident, you can gain PR through a partner visa. The process is two-stage — you receive a temporary visa first, then permanent residency typically 2 years later once your relationship is assessed.

Parent Visas

Australian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor their parents for PR through the Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 143) or standard Parent Visa (Subclass 103). Processing times differ significantly between these options.

Student to PR Pathway

International students can transition to permanent residency through a strategic pathway: complete an eligible qualification, apply for the Subclass 485 Graduate Visa, gain work experience or improve your English and points score, then apply for a skilled visa (189, 190, or 491→191). Australia PR Points Test

Most skilled PR visas use a points-based system. Points are awarded for:

  • Age — maximum points for applicants aged 25–32
  • English proficiency — higher IELTS/PTE scores earn more points
  • Work experience — both overseas and Australian experience count
  • Qualifications — Australian and overseas educational qualifications
  • State nomination — 5 points for Subclass 190
  • Regional nomination — 15 points for Subclass 491
  • Partner skills — points if your partner also has a skilled occupation and English
  • Professional year — 5 points for completing an approved professional year program
  • NAATI accreditation — 5 points for community language credentials
  • Australian study — 5 points for completing 2 years of study in Australia
  • Regional study — 5 additional points for studying in regional Australia
