Planning to study in Australia? This complete student visa 500 document checklist covers every document you need to lodge a decision-ready application in 2026.
At VisaTasker, our MARA-registered migration agents have helped hundreds of students lodge decision-ready applications. Below is the complete, up-to-date document checklist you need for 2026.
📕 1. Valid Passport
Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your intended stay in Australia. If it expires within six months of your course end date, renew it before applying. Include a clear colour scan of the biographical page and any pages showing previous visas or travel stamps.
📄 2. Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)
You need an official CoE from a CRICOS-registered education provider. This confirms your course details, start and end dates, and tuition fees. If you have multiple CoEs (for packaged courses), include all of them.
📄 3. Genuine Student (GS) Statement
Since 23 March 2024, the old Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) test has been replaced by the Genuine Student (GS) requirement. You will answer questions directly in ImmiAccount (maximum 150 words per question) covering:
- ✅ Your current circumstances, including ties to family, community, employment, and economic situation in your home country
- ✅ Why you chose this particular course and education provider in Australia
- ✅ How completing the course will benefit you personally and professionally
- ✅ Your understanding of the conditions of the student visa
This is arguably the most important part of your application. A well-crafted GS response backed by strong supporting evidence can make all the difference. Our team at VisaTasker specialises in helping students put together compelling statements.
💳 4. Financial Evidence
You must demonstrate access to sufficient funds to cover tuition fees, living costs, and travel. The current financial requirements are:
- ✅ Living costs: AUD 29,710 per year (updated for 2026)
- ✅ Tuition fees: As stated on your CoE
- ✅ School-age dependants: AUD 13,502 per year per child
- ✅ Return airfare: Evidence of a return ticket or sufficient funds to purchase one
Acceptable evidence includes bank statements (covering at least the past three months), loan approval letters, scholarship documentation, or evidence of financial support from a sponsor (with their financial documents attached).
🗣️ 5. English Language Proficiency
Unless you are exempt (for example, you are a citizen of an English-speaking country or studied in English for five years), you must provide a valid English test result taken within the past two years. Accepted tests include:
- ✅ IELTS Academic (minimum 5.5 overall, or as required by your provider)
- ✅ PTE Academic
- ✅ TOEFL iBT
- ✅ Cambridge C1 Advanced
- ✅ OET (for health-related courses)
Check your education provider’s specific English requirements, as these may be higher than the Department’s minimum.
🏥 6. Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
OSHC is mandatory for the entire duration of your student visa. Your policy must cover you from the date you arrive in Australia until the end of your visa. Include your OSHC certificate showing the insurer name, policy number, and coverage dates.
🎓 7. Academic Qualifications
Provide certified copies of all academic documents relevant to your application:
- ✅ Secondary school certificates and transcripts
- ✅ University degree certificates and academic transcripts
- ✅ Any postgraduate qualifications
- ✅ Professional certifications or vocational training records
If your documents are not in English, you must include certified translations by a NAATI-accredited translator.
💼 8. Employment Evidence (If Applicable)
If you are currently employed or have relevant work experience, include:
- ✅ Employment reference letters on company letterhead with dates, position, and duties
- ✅ Recent payslips (last three months)
- ✅ Tax returns or group certificates
This is particularly important for mature-age students, as it helps demonstrate your career progression and how the course fits into your professional goals.
🏥 9. Health Examinations
You may be required to undergo a health examination, including a chest X-ray, depending on your country of origin and course type (especially for courses involving patient contact such as nursing or medicine). Generate your HAP (Health Assessment Protocol) ID through ImmiAccount before booking your examination with a panel-approved physician.
📋 10. Character Documents
Provide police clearance certificates from every country where you have lived for 12 months or more in the past 10 years since turning 16. These must be less than 12 months old at the time of your visa decision.
📕 11. Passport-Sized Photographs
Provide recent passport-sized photographs (45mm x 35mm) with a white background that meet Australian visa photo specifications.
📋 12. Evidence of Course Research
To support your GS statement, it helps to include evidence that you have genuinely researched your course and provider. This might include screenshots of course comparisons, correspondence with the education provider, or notes from open day attendance.
💡 Additional Tips for a Strong Application
Start early. Ideally, begin preparing your documents 9 to 12 months before your course start date. This gives you time to obtain police clearances, complete health checks, and gather financial evidence.
Be consistent. Any mismatch between your application form, GS statement, and supporting documents can raise red flags. Double-check every detail.
Upload clear, colour scans. Use tidy file names (e.g., NAME_Passport.pdf, NAME_CoE.pdf) and ensure all documents are legible.
Use the official tool. The Department of Home Affairs provides a Document Checklist Tool that generates a personalised list based on your circumstances.
💰 What Does the Student Visa Cost?
From 1 July 2025, the student visa application charge is AUD 1,600 for the primary applicant. Additional applicants (family members) incur separate charges.
⏱️ How Long Does Processing Take?
Processing times vary by country and individual circumstances, but typically range from 4 to 12 weeks for decision-ready applications. Lodging a complete application with all documents from day one significantly reduces processing time.
