⚠️ Key Eligibility Requirements

  • ✅ Hold a passport from an eligible 462 country
  • ✅ Be aged 18 to 30 (inclusive) at the time of application
  • ✅ Have at least AUD 5,000 in available funds plus return airfare
  • ✅ Have completed at least two years of undergraduate study at a tertiary institution (country-specific)
  • ✅ Meet English language requirements (country-specific)
  • ✅ Obtain a government letter of support (required for some nationalities)
  • ✅ Have no dependent children
  • ✅ Meet health and character requirements

📄 Document Checklist

1. Valid Passport

A current passport from an eligible Subclass 462 country, valid for at least six months beyond your planned travel.

2. Proof of Sufficient Funds

Evidence of at least AUD 5,000 in accessible funds, plus evidence of a return airfare or sufficient funds to purchase one. Provide a recent bank statement (within the last month).

3. Tertiary Education Evidence

You must show you have completed at least two years of full-time undergraduate study (or equivalent). Provide:

  • ✅ University or college transcripts
  • ✅ Degree certificate or letter of completion
  • ✅ If your course is ongoing, a letter from the institution confirming at least two years of completed study

Requirements may vary by nationality — some countries require a completed bachelor’s degree.

4. English Language Proficiency

Most 462 applicants must demonstrate functional English. Provide one of the following:

  • ✅ IELTS overall score of 4.5 (or equivalent PTE, TOEFL, Cambridge)
  • ✅ Evidence of completing at least one year of full-time study in English at a secondary or tertiary level
  • ✅ Passport from a country where English is the official language (may apply to some eligible countries)

Country-specific exemptions may apply — check the requirements for your nationality.

5. Government Letter of Support (If Required)

Some nationalities must obtain a letter of support from their government before applying. This is typically issued by the relevant government department in your home country. Countries that commonly require this include Bangladesh, Chile, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Turkey, and Vietnam.

Contact your country’s relevant government department early, as obtaining this letter can take several weeks.

6. Ballot Registration (Select Countries)

For the 2025-26 program year, citizens of China, India, and Vietnam must register for a ballot and receive an invitation before they can lodge a visa application. Annual caps apply:

  • ✅ India: 1,000 places
  • ✅ China and Vietnam: Capped allocations (check the Department’s website for current numbers)

Only applicants who receive a ballot invitation can proceed to lodge.

7. Passport-Sized Photographs

Recent photographs meeting Australian visa specifications.

8. Health Documents

  • ✅ Health examination may be required depending on your country of origin
  • ✅ Chest X-ray for applicants from certain countries
  • ✅ Generate your HAP ID in ImmiAccount if a medical is requested

9. Character Documents

  • ✅ Police clearance certificates from countries where you lived for 12+ months in the past 10 years since turning 16
  • ✅ May not be routinely requested for first-time applicants but could be asked during processing

10. Return or Onward Travel Evidence

A return flight booking or evidence of sufficient funds to purchase a return ticket.

📄 Second and Third Year Extensions

Like the 417, you can extend your 462 visa by completing specified work in regional Australia:

Second year: 88 days of specified work during your first year.

Third year: Six months of specified work during your second year.

Documents needed for extensions:

  • ✅ Employer reference letters (dated, signed, with ABN, specifying dates, duties, and location)
  • ✅ Payslips covering the specified work period
  • ✅ Tax records and bank statements
  • ✅ Evidence that work was in an eligible industry and regional postcode

📄 Application Process

1. Register for the ballot (if required for your nationality) and wait for an invitation

2. Create an ImmiAccount

3. Complete the online application

4. Upload all documents in PDF or JPEG format

5. Pay the visa fee (AUD 650 in 2025-26)

6. Complete any requested health checks or biometrics

7. Receive your visa grant notification

Processing for the 462 is typically slower than the 417 — expect 6 to 10 weeks, sometimes longer for education and English verification.
