At VisaTasker, we help applicants understand the requirements and lodge a smooth application. Here is the complete checklist for 2026.

⚠️ Key Eligibility Requirements

  • ✅ Hold a passport from an eligible country (UK, Canada, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Japan, South Korea, Denmark, the Netherlands, and many more)
  • ✅ Be aged 18 to 30 at the time of application (up to 35 for citizens of the UK, Canada, Denmark, France, Ireland, and Italy under bilateral agreements)
  • ✅ Have at least AUD 5,000 in available funds
  • ✅ Have no dependent children travelling with you
  • ✅ Not have previously held a Subclass 417 first working holiday visa (unless applying for a second or third)
  • ✅ Be outside Australia when you apply and when the visa is granted (for first WHV)
  • ✅ Meet health and character requirements

📄 First Working Holiday Visa — Document Checklist

1. Valid Passport

A current passport from an eligible country. Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your planned travel dates.

2. Proof of Sufficient Funds

Evidence that you have at least AUD 5,000 plus sufficient funds for a return airfare. Acceptable evidence includes:

  • ✅ Recent bank statement (within the last month) showing the balance
  • ✅ Credit card statement showing available credit
  • ✅ A combination of bank savings and return ticket booking

3. Passport-Sized Photographs

Recent photographs meeting Australian visa photo specifications.

4. Return or Onward Travel

Evidence of a return flight booking, or evidence of sufficient funds to purchase a return ticket when needed.

5. Health Documents

  • ✅ You may be required to complete a health examination depending on your country of origin or intended activities in Australia
  • ✅ Chest X-ray may be required for applicants from certain countries
  • ✅ Generate your HAP ID in ImmiAccount if a medical examination is requested

6. Character Documents

  • ✅ Police clearance certificates may be required if you have lived in any country for 12 months or more in the past 10 years since turning 16
  • ✅ For most first-time WHV applicants from low-risk countries, police checks are not routinely requested but may be asked for during processing

7. Proof of Age

Your passport serves as primary proof of age. A birth certificate may be requested as additional evidence.

8. No Dependent Children Declaration

You will declare in your application that you do not have dependent children accompanying you.

📄 Second Working Holiday Visa — Additional Documents

To apply for a second year, you must have completed 88 days of specified work in regional Australia during your first WHV. You need:

  • ✅ Employer reference letter — dated, signed, on letterhead, with ABN, specifying the dates worked, duties, and location
  • ✅ Payslips covering the entire 88-day period
  • ✅ Tax records (payment summaries, group certificates)
  • ✅ Bank statements showing wage deposits
  • ✅ Employment contract (if available)
  • ✅ Evidence that the work was in an eligible industry (agriculture, mining, construction, bushfire recovery, tourism and hospitality in certain postcodes, etc.) and in a designated regional postcode

Keep meticulous records throughout your first year — missing even a few days of evidence can jeopardise your second-year application.

📄 Third Working Holiday Visa — Additional Documents

For a third year, you must have completed six months (approximately 179 days) of specified work in regional Australia during your second WHV. The same types of evidence apply:

  • ✅ Employer reference letters
  • ✅ Payslips and payment summaries
  • ✅ Bank statements
  • ✅ Evidence of regional location and eligible industry

UK Passport Holders — Special Provisions

Under the Australia-UK Free Trade Agreement, UK citizens can apply for second and third Working Holiday visas without completing specified regional work. This is a significant advantage.

📄 Application Process

1. Create an ImmiAccount on the Department of Home Affairs website

2. Complete the online application form

3. Upload all required documents in PDF or JPEG format

4. Pay the visa application fee (AUD 650 in 2025-26)

5. Complete biometrics or health checks if requested

6. Receive your visa grant notification by email

Most first-time 417 visas are processed within 4 to 21 days, with 90% finalised within 10 days.

💡 Tips for a Smooth Application

Apply 3 to 6 months before your planned travel. Peak season (November to February) sees longer processing times.

Keep your specified work records organised from day one. If you plan to extend, tracking your employment evidence throughout the year is much easier than trying to reconstruct it later.

Check the eligible postcode list. The list of postcodes where specified work qualifies was expanded in April 2025 — make sure your work location is included.
